very little military . I´ve had him for 3 years already he was given to me by some one else who loved him she used to hug him, kiss him, pet him, talk sweet to him, but never feed him or gave him watwr. The owner knows we have a dog and 4 cockatiels and 2 cats they are all well feed and well taken care of, so the owner gave us the bird, knowing she couldn´t care for him properly. Here is the PROBLEM the first two years he was ok with us my dad even made him a perch that wouldn´t be above our head, but I will admit we dont like to hold the animals a lot just ocasionally. About a year ago the owner came to visit the bird was happy I gess he would make the pupils of his eyes really small, the old owner was kissing him and all and out of the blue he bit me. Ever since he´s been agressive, we cant even get him out of the cage because he´ll try to atack us he´s also very jelous of the other pets. What can i do to have the old sweet loving bird I used to have

  1. A macaw has a very good memory and he remembers his old affectionate owner and misses her. If she raised him as a chick, then his affection for her will be greater.

He does not understand that he was given up. From his perspective, you are keeping him hostage from being with his old owner again.

I truly recommend, for the sake of the bird, you ask the the previous owner does not visit anymore because you’ll go back to square one each time she leaves.

Secondly, you have a macaw. They are loving, extremely intelligent and affectionate birds. If they do not get what they want, or they don’t like you, they have powerful beaks to let you know their feelings. They are nothing like cats or dogs.

You have to understand that fact and learn to care for him better. Pervious owner didn’t feed him well but showered him with love. You fed him great but didn’t handle him all that much, and who does he prefer?

Strange isn’t it that animals teach us what matters more in life.
If you love your macaw and want him to love you back, then learn to love him and show him how much you care.

This time, you have to be patient and earn his trust once again. Once you have it, make sure he knows you love him and show him love everyday.

    Good Luck.

  2. Correct diet
    Correct handling
    Correct cage/stuff

When you have a macaw you cant just hold it when you want to, they should be out several hours a day. They do become spitful if they are stuck in a cage all day.

I do hope that it does not just have one perch, and that it has many in many different thicknesses and levels, that is very important for their feet.

Believe it or not, it is not as important for larger parrots to stay under your eyes. That is kind of like an old wives tale.

If your bird is not getting enough fresh and healthy foods in every group they need that will make them testy(it should only be eating about 10% of its diet in dry forms like seeds pellets)

If you want a nice bird fix those things and spend the time of day with it that it needs(at least 3 hours) that does not mean that it has to be held during that time, but it needs to be out of the cage

  3. Cliffieduckie

He may be going through bird “puberty” and will be aggressive and mean for a while. If he tries to attack you, say “no” in a firm but not yelling voice and keep looking straight in his eyes until HE breaks eye contact. This will show him that you are STILL the boss. If he bites when you try to handle him, try using a perch until he gets better about not biting because he can bite the perch all he wants and it wont hurt a bit :) Good luck!
