Breeder’s Blend supplement for birds?

The direction say feed a pinch per bird per day. How do I feed it? Do I sprinkle it on the seed or add it to water? I already put calcium plus in the water and have a cuttlebone that they love.
I am planning to breed them. They are zebra finchs.

  1. A breeders blend is usually added to soft food not seed. If you are not breeding this is probably not the right thing to add to your pets diet. A breeder additive usually contains spirulina and other things that are specific to bring a bird into breeding condition this is not desirable to encourage a pet bird to breed. Adding calcium to the water is probably not a good idea either as it does not give the bird the choice whether to take in the calium or not.
a cuttlebone and a mineral block are the best way to provide calcium and minerals to a pet bird. He can help himself to as much or as little as he wants. If you are intending to improve your pets diet it is better to slowly teach your bird to eat a variety of greens, veggies and fruit rather than a seed only diet. Remember you can’t suddenly change a birds food as he wont recognise new items as food and may starve. A pellet only diet is also not a good idea. I do not know what bird you have but in general a variety of food will provide nutrients in the natural form without adding more than a mineral block and cuttlefish.

I dont know too much about softbill. In South Africa you can buy a soft bill mix, sort of like crushed pellets that you add dry to the seed, you would add the breeder mix to this.
The only thing I ever add to water is deworming once a year. I believe finches are easy to breed but they need a soft food available to be good parents, they do sometimes abandon babies. I add the minerals etc to my soft mix but my birds eat mostly a cooked parrot mix with very little seed, fresh fruit and veg daily.

  2. My Zebra’s love grapes so what I do is sprinkle some of the powder onto split grapes. That’s the method the breeder that gave me the stuff recommended (on fruit).

Just out of curiosity is yours the one in a white tub with a red lid?
