  3. Okay, I’ve raised pigeons for almost 45 years now. You can’t just take an adult bird and let it go and expect it to come back without it’s having a chance to settle in and see what’s going on on the outside of your loft/coop.

    The best way to do what you want is to get some young birds just out of the nest and settle them to your coop. Put them on a landing board (and have a trap arrangement so that they can get into the coop) where they can look around at first. As they begin to take wing, they will begin to see the local area and know where they are.

    No matter what breed of pigeon you choose (or mixed breed), it’s all the same. I suggest that you might want to go to the American Racing Pigeon Union website at: http://www.pigeon.org and ask for their beginner’s booklet. It has some info in there that you could use.
