I found a baby bird???

I was on a bike ride and then I see the poor little guy in the middle of the street. He is now in my house and he seems healthy and in great shape. Who should I contact? What should I feed him until then? Where should he stay? I have no idea where his nest is because he was found in the road.
Thanks!

  1. can he fly? best thing is to just let him go… if hes out hopping around than he is ready to take care of himself…

  2. Well if you touched it the momma bird won’t take it back because it has your scent on it. You could try to feed it worms, but more than likely it will die.

It depends on how old it is if its young still sadly it will probly die. I tried to save a baby bird before and it died.

  5. The baby bird needs his mother, however you may attempt to raise him. Try feeding him white bread deep in water so it’s soggy. Small pieces. Keep him warm and do not scare him.

  7. We found a baby blue jay a couple days ago…and we have him in a bird cage and waht we feed him is mushed dog food mixed w/ water so its liquidy–or you can try mushed bread soaked in water. And if your brave find worms andmush them because thats what their mothers feed them. Make sure to keep it warmm, clean and when you feed it , feed it a liitl bit. because you don’t want it to choke on it.

  8. The best bet is to take him back to where you found him, and put him in the yard next to where he was. Either he’s learning to fly, and probably landed there, or he fell out of the nest and is trying to follow his parents. This time of year there are tons of juvie birds all over. Their parents know how to find them, and if they are not sick or stunted, their parents will continue to feed them where ever they may be. Contrary to popular mythology, most songbirds acutally have a lousy sense of smell, so handling the bird will NOT repel his parents. Just like your parents, if they lose a kid, they won’t care WHAT it smells like, so long as it’s safe!

Maybe the mom did not want the bird. Take care of him. Is he able to fly? If so release him so he’ll be happy, if not able to fly, keep him in a small aquarium with no lid. They usually cost about 5 or 10 dollars. Put paper towels all in the aquarium and put bird food in and a bowl of water. If not able to eat on his self go and buy a new born bird formula and feed him with a siring. Look on google to see the exact way to feed a bird( baby or grown.) And wrap him in a very warm blanket. Trust me, my mom is a vet. Got any more questions? E-mail me at rajabell5@yahoo.com.

  12. About 8 years ago the same thing happened to me at a mall parking lot. It was a baby pigeon. I called a wildlife center and they told me about baby bird formula. I got some from Petsmart and it came with a little syringe (no needle!) and a feeding schedule. I just squirted a little bit at a time in the back of his mouth. He survived and grew to be an adult pigeon.

  13. First of all, he probably can’t fly. Nor sit on a perch so buy a one story hamster cage and put in small animal litter. As food is concerened, go to a pet store and look to see if their are any handfeeding formulas. A few brands include things like Kaytee exact handfeeding formula and Lafeber’s Nutri Start. There may also be some other brand of bird formula that I don’t know about but If you cant find some handfeeding brand, Then visit another pet shop. In the meantime, when I found an abandoned baby bird I put strawberries, water, crackers, and liquid bird vitamin supplement into the blender. Pet stores will stock speical bottles to feed with. When the bird reaches adulthood start feeding him some bird seed and soon enough let him go.

  15. Hope the bird is still alive. Do not feed a bird bread or worms. If it was in the street, it must have suffered some trauma or it would have flown away before you could have picked it up. If it was a trauma, it is likely in shock. Put it in a box with papertowels in the bottom and warm it with a lightbulb. Do not try to feed it or give it water. Call the Humane Society or the zoo. Vets know little to nothing about birds, especially wild birds. Find a bird rehabber. We are everywhere.

If it comes out of shock by morning, release it away from any streets if possible. If you have to feed it, softened cat or dog chow is the best for it. Protein.

    Good luck.

  16. Can’t believe all the horrible answers you received…Angela gave good advice however. This is most likely a fledgling…who it being cared for by the parents… if it has not been long since you took him….you need to put him back near where you found him in a safe spot. Any scrubs or trees nearby you can place him in? The parents are probably looking for him now. If they do not find him, they may leave the area thinking he has been eaten by a predator. The parents WILL NOT reject a bird that has been touched by human hands…this is an old wives tale, and not true in the least. Your only other choice is to get this bird to a local wildlife rehab. A vet or humane society may have a contact number for you to call or do an internet search. Good luck.

  17. We found a baby starling and I had been taking care of it eversince. The bird you have was more than likely trying to “test” its wings to fly.

If you call a wild bird rehab center (like I did) all they will tell you is that to let it go in a safe area and that they cannot take it in to take care of because it’s not “hurt”. I was even told by one that if it dies, then that’s just the way it is. When I heard that last statement, I decided to keep my baby starling and was very happy that I did. He’s now a talking starling.

You could tell if your baby bird is a starling by looking at the inside of its beak. If it looks yellow then it’s a starling. Take a picture of your baby bird…camera phones work great! It will show more on the picture that yellow color I’m talking about.

As for food, if it is a starling, it’s a protein/insect eating bird. Even as a little baby, its an insect eating bird. But if you’re not up to that, a high protein cat food (as cat food has MUCH higher protein than dog food) soaked and made really soft, almost watery, is good for the bird. You can boil some eggs and put it together with the cat food.

If it’s another type of bird, you can go to PETSMART OR PETCO and they have some baby bird food you can buy. Take with you a picture of your bird so you can find out if it looks like one of the ones on the product you’re buying.

Feed it with your hands or a popsicle stick avoiding to put the food/stick too far in the mouth. Don’t make the mistake of making the cat food too drippy or watery. Be careful also when giving it water. Do it by letting the water drip from your finger or those baby medication dropper, but just let the water drip from the dropper (and NOT releasing all the water from the dropper all at once). It’s a lot of work! If you’re working, it’s gonna be hard. It needs to eat several times a day. If it’s really young, like a baby at least every 30 – 45 minutes. Feel free to contact me. Hope that helps.
