I was mowing the lawn yesterday and a darling little frog jumped on my leg…
I feed birds..make frog houses in the gardens…have bird and butterfly baths…I try to be very earth friendly…
Yet now I feel like Charles Manson…crickets, frogs…oh my~~~
Does any one know how I can prevent being a killer…I have to mow the grass…
Or how many “creatures” I am slaughtering on an acre of land…????
Plant bushes, trees, and decorative grass so you are not mowing so much area.
I once found a rabbits nest in the middle of my back yard and marked it with a stick and did not mow around it until the mom and bunnies move out.

I am the same way, I fell bad for your little friends too. If you have a dog, maybe him walking in the yard before you mow will send them home. Maybe attatch a broom to the front of the mower to give them a little warning?? Good luck

I don’t think it is possible to go through life without harming some living creatures – animal and/or plant – either through accidental injury, or due to our own need to survive or to maintain health and an acceptable, basic standard of living.
But I do think one can take care to avoid unnecessary harm. Your question shows that you are a caring, empathetic person who believes that natural things – even the tiny, insignificant ones – contribute to the inter-connected web of life on this earth, and deserve to be protected whenever possible. I think your attitude and approach is very responsible and quite admirable.
The suggestions already posted sounded good to me, and I hope that other useful ideas are also offered.

please, don’t feel so bad! when ur mowing it’s usually daylight so a majority of the wildlife is sleeping.. waiting for night to fall so they can come out again…… so don’t feel as though ur actually killing off ur little friends cuz given the fact that u might get one or maybe two….. just think.. with that much land and all the things u have for the lil guys, there’s probably way too many for u to even think ur doing harm! natural predators, such as snakes, birds of prey, wild cats/dogs, and such will do way more then u can ever do, so just let it go and think of the positives.. u’ve created a great habitate.. enjoy it! plus, if u really believe u making that big of an impact… just simply raise ur deck, which in turn…. raises the blade!!! good luck and happy living.
