a. It was irresponsible of you to leave someone’s key IN their door when you know they are away
b. It’s not up to you to decide whether or not the animal is being abused, that’s why you should get the authorities involved
c. You’re not the rightful owner of the dog, how dare you refuse to turn it back over
You were kind to volunteer to help your friend while they were away, but it sounds like you’ve got some sort of God complex going on. Let it go man, it’s not your dog.

Salmonella bacteria can be found in milk and dairy products, eggs, poultry, and processed meats. You can spread the disease after handling food or utensils contaminated with the bacteria. Infected people and pets such as dogs, cats, and turtles can also spread the disease.
You will get sick with this particular food poisoning 8 to 48 hours after eating contaminated food.
dogs can transmit the poison through their feces dogs or puppies can get salmonella from about anything they eat. Including raw hide chews. The dog food they eat even can contribute to salmonella, but it did not come from your house inparticular. The dog may have eaten infected feces from another animal.

I don’t know where the dog got Samonella at (probably from getting into rotten trash, and probably at home, not your house).
Dogs DO get samonella. I had two of my dogs decide to get into a trash bag and ate an old rotten chicken (was cooked at one time). Anyway the female started throwing up that night. The male ended up with diarrhea the next day. I called the vet to confirm my suspicions and they did. Dog DO get samonella or other food posionings.
