Umm.. you can’t put pet birds especially small ones outside with no cage, they will fly away and die out on their own… and parakeets have hook bills finches and canaries have pointed beaks.. they will not get along. The parakeets can do some serious damage to the canaries and finches.

It’s MUCH too cold in most of the U.S. for canaries and other of the more delicate finches. Parakeets can be raised outdoors if they have an area with sufficient heat, but I’ve never seen that done much further north than central Texas.

Rather than try to keep birds captive, I’d suggest learning about wild birds. There are incredible birds out there just waiting to be learned about; put a few feeders out, get some books on birds, and I think you’ll be surprised at what you see.

They respond well to different types of food and feeders; I feed birds from my apartment porch, and I’ve seen nearly 30 different species in my own “backyard.” I use sunflower seed, cracked corn, mixed seed, shelled and unshelled peanuts, and nyger thistle seed to attract finches (there are LOTS of wild finches out there). You can also put out nest boxes as well as nestin material. Get a book on your part of the country (the Rocky Mountains are the great divider when it comes to birds, and you will see VERY different species west of the Rockies compared with east of the range. A good pair of binoculars is also handy.

    Happy birding :-)

  3. I don’t think it would be such a good idea, unless you live in real warm climates because birds can’t handle cold weather at all, at least those kind. Why don’t you buy a Dove? Beautiful birds that make a really nice sound and are very hearty against cold climates and are often kept outside. Also Doves are a symbol of luck and love. I had a dove before and it made a very pleasant ‘coo’ sound.

  4. Your question is not very clear. Are you saying you just want to let them fly free in the yard? You have to build a proper outdoor aviary to keep them in and that isn’t easy.
Budgies and many finches cannot survive almost anywhere outside in N.America except the deep south through the winter because they are tropical. BUT canaries can live outdoor all year round even in Canada provided they have a shed to go into that is kept at just a few degrees warmer than freezing so their water doesn’t freeze. That doesn’t mean you can just go to the store and buy a canary and put it outside, it will die. They have to be acclimated to it which takes weeks and months. You must do a lot of reading up on it before you even attempt it. The best thing you could do would be to find a “caged bird society” or “bird club” somewhere near you and start going to the meetings. Try googling “caged bird society” and your city to find one near you.

  5. They would all fly away and end up starving to death or be easy prey for domesticated animals or wild animals or birds. It is also illegal to release non-native birds into the ecosystem. If you cannot keep these birds find proper homes for them..not sentencing them to death.
