Bird Stores In My Area?

Dear Yahoo! Answers Members,

Hi, I have been looking for a store that mainly sells things for birds. Such as food, cages, treats, calcium enrichment, perches, and other medical things for my birds.

The local pet shops around me are selling very bad things for birds. I was looking at a large parakeet cage, and it said that it has large amounts of zinc and lead in it! also, their bird food isn’t very good, like my birds look thinner. The treats have also gain price in a bad way, too. They are also selling cardboard nest boxes! Everything is so wrong for birds.

This one lady had a beautiful Ring Necked parakeet, and they person who was in charge of nail/wing clipping cut both the Blood Feather and the Kwik! Thankfully, I had corn starch on me (I always have this when at pet stores,) and I clipped the bird’s wings properly and saved it’s life.

I do not want to report this, because what would happen to the other pet owners in my area? Where would they go to get their animal supplies?

I live in Middletown, Ohio and I was wondering if there was a bird store around my area. I do not need to get a pet bird, just the supplies.

I don’t buy products online.
Also, I have two parakeets (budgies) and two cockatiels (Normal Grey), I don’t want stores for Macaws, or anything like that.

  3. I live in NJ, so I obviously don’t know anything about Ohio stores. However, try http://bird-paradise.biz/ – they’re a wonderful exotic bird store. I practically live there. All of their birds are well taken care of and they have a huge selection of bird supplies. They ship anything in their store except for the birds to anywhere in the US, usually for free. Everything is of really great quality and alot cheaper than normal pet stores, too. Their food is great, and I highly reccomend their ultimate blend if you have large birds. If not, they have every kind of food you can think of. Have a look around their site, you’ll be instantly amazed.

First I am not from Ohio, but if you are being so critical of these stores than you will need to give in and buy products online. There are many reliable bird sites like bird.com that register you with a screen name and make you use a password to order items.
As for food and treats, fresh fruits and greens are a wonderful supplement for you birds. My keets and tiels absolutely love broccoli, collard greens, turnip greens, mustard greens, zucchini, apple, oranges, and even cantaloupe. When it comes to fruit you need to limit the amount (like half an apple between the 4 birds) because fruits contain natural sugars, too much can cause diarrhea. You can get the greens from Walmart, or other local grocery store Just wash them well, prior feeding out.
I hope I was able to help, good luck.
