  1. You should try to be careful with breeding parrots. The female will injure or sometimes even kill the male. Keep a good eye on them. And another thing is that they will mate inside the nesting box, so you wont really see them do it. Females are exteemely moody in mating season and will chase the male away a few times before mating. Make sure you give them at least 13 hours of light a day, and keep a dimmed light in the room at night time.

This helps increase breeding potential. You can also but breeding pellets from your aviary or avian vet. This helps the breeding potential too.

Good luck and i hope this helps

  2. Big Rigger

How old are they it could be that she isn’t at her sexual maturity yet, or that she doesn’t want him as a mate in that sense, sometimes it takes a couple of times going through the hormonal stage before both are on the same wave length.
They can be hormonal a couple of times during the season.
You can offer more healthy treats, and see if some nesting material for her to work on would get her in the mood, Where is the nesting box if it is down on the floor it may not be in a good position for her to decide to use it.
Before encouraging them to mate make sure they have a well bird checkup especially her since she will be the one laying the eggs and needing the calcium and mineral replacements, you can possibly find out if she is old enough at this time to breed.

  3. She has made it very clear that she is not interested in mating right now. Mutual preening is something pairs will do all the time, not just mating season. If they have not had young together before, it’s possible she is not interested in him as a mate. Don’t worry so much about them, they like their privacy. There is one little trick you can try, lots of large breeders do it. Feed only sunflower seeds for about 2 weeks. Don’t give them their regular food, just the black oil sunflower seeds. It helps them lose their inhibitions. Do not do this any longer than 2 weeks. Didn’t they breed when the other owner had them?? You may have to wait until next breeding season. They may be out of sync from moving. If the sunflower seed does not help, I would not expect them to breed until next season. There is nothing else you can do . Feeding sunflower seed will not hurt them or make them sick, I know this for sure. We have pairs here at the aviary that we do this to, and they are just fine. I would not tell you to do something if I though it would hurt your birds. So anyone that reads this that thinks its a horrible idea, please, I know what I’m doing. Please read my profile
