Probably dead, and now that you touched it, the mother will not come back to care for it’s young.

If you found it on the ground, it’s probably dead. Eggs can’t survive for long without an adult bird to regulate its temperature.

You can tell if there’s an embryo inside the egg by candling it. (Assuming of course that the egg is old enough)
You can candle an egg by getting a bright flashlight and putting the egg in front of the beam (between you and the light). If you can see a dark spot in the red-yellow of the egg, then it’s alive! You could even see an eye if it’s old enough ;P
Or, instead of a flashlight, you can try holding it up to the sun. Hold it up to where it blocks the sun from view, and then look to see if you can see an embryo.

if you hold it up to the light, and you see inside the egg that part of it is black with a little white, then it has an air sack, and should hatch soon. If you see veins it is most likely still alive but very early in. It probably wont hatch, and even if it does, it will probably be very hard to care for the baby bird.

If the egg was still warm, it might be alive. If you candle it now, make sure the egg is fertile in the first place! You can candle an egg by sticking a bright light through the egg. A fertile egg has dark stuff inside of it with veins branching out. An infertile egg is clear. If not, then at least you know why the egg’s not in a nest. I would try to classify it as soon as possible.
I learned from this site that trying to take care of it will be extremely difficult. Take a look for yourself.

You can put it in a towel and put a light bulb (turned on) under the towel. We believed for 100 years that a mother bird would never return if the egg or nest was touched by human hands. Now scientists have found that it not true. So you can put it back in the nest if you can find the nest. I hope you get a baby bird to hatch. It isn’t hard; but you have to get lucky that it’s not too hot or too cold and we don’t have any numbers to guide you.
Good luck.
