  1. Male cockatiels have brighter colors (like cheek color or head color) and males are also more vocal. Females have dull colors and dont sing

Cockatiels can talk if you put a lot of training into it

cockatiels can live up to 25 years with great care

I dont think its too young at all to start finger training. I’ve had chicks that I handfeed myself and I start training them at 3 weeks old!

I dont think you can tell how old they are

    I have 5 cockatiels, (3 males and 2 females)
my males can say “pretty bird” and do the wolf whistle, and when you sneeze, they will say “achoo!”

  2. First of all, I would get the cockatiel a new cage. Budgies tend to bully cockatiels, especially if they were not slowly introduced. (Actually, I wouldn’t even leave a finch in with budgies because they could gang up on him and hurt him but that’s a different topic). Also, he needs time to adjust to his new home.
As far as gender, males usually have bright orange cheeks and females have dull ones (for most mutations). A male will be more noisy and a female will probably be more cuddly.
I think he will get used to the perches soon, but after reading about what conditions he was in, I would definitely recommend having him checked up by a vet. Who knows what he might have picked up in those conditions, and you don’t want your other bird to get sick.
Give him a few days to adjust before you start trying to get him on your finger. If he’s still scared after that then give him more time.
They can learn to talk, especially if they are bonded to you, but he might start imitating budgie noises.
They usually live about 20 years.
    I don’t think there’s a way you can tell his age…
Try hanging the broccoli like a toy, cutting it up really tiny like seed sizes, pretending to eat it yourself and then giving it to him, and feeding it to him by hand once he’s not afraid of you to get him to eat it.
Give him a lot of patience and time, it sounds like he’s been through a lot. It’s great that you rescued him from such awful conditions.

  3. Im glad to hear you got one. But hey I will tell you that they are an incredible respnsiblity. I got one when I was 8 and sad to say I did not take the best of care of the poor bird. It wasn’t that I neglected him in the sense of toys and food and stuff like that but in the matter of attention. NOW I will warn you and I MEAN warn you, your bird has been neglected I can tell right now you want to spend every minute with the poor thing, now i hope you do realize that this bird will grow to love your attention, and when in a couple of years you will have to continue to spend as much love and care as you started cause the bird will miss the exsess love and he or she will screech extremely lud untill you pay attention to him or her. So just remember you spend 2 hours a day now with him, you will get him in a pattern where if u don’t spend 2 hours in the future he will become upset. Just a heads up you will not want to deal with their calls for attention.

SOmE VERY IMPORTANT TIPS THAT I LEARNED:

ok my bird we believe was “seriously neglected previous home” both attentionwise and probably phsically. So DON’T Finger train the bird yet. they perch on your finger like they do a perch so if it had no perch your smells and just the fact that the poor bird doesn’t know how to properly perch will scare him or her. They enjoy listening to other birds so I advise bird tapes, BUT do NOT get a bird tape that has blue jays calline because blue jays are there enemies they do not like them. When your bird is relaxed and calm his creast (the yellow on the top of his head will be erect) when he is studying objects it will hover up and down, when agravated it will be completely flat unless you are patting him and then you yourself are pushing the crest down. As for those red scheeks those are his ears when you become familiar to him he will love you to scratch his ears as well as crest.

Be very careful with what you feed them to be honest I wouldn’t feed him anything human unless it was a fruit or vegtable, but be careful cause i heard brocallii gives them diahrea. They love pieces of apples, and things like that. Don’t feed them birdseed that you would feed wild birds that seed is more of a diet then a healthy meal. They LOVE any kind of store bought treat special things that have honey and theings like that they like.

Don’t place a lot of toys at once i their cage cause it is very overwhelming to them. When they are scarred they will “hiss” just like a cat will and run furiously back in forth in their cage.

Ummm Idk if your bird’s wings are clipped but if you have a lot of places in your house like windows or places where the bird “flying” could kill himself then get his/her wings clipped because that slows the bird’s speed down. It does hurt the bird a little but if you get it properly done it will help, they only cut pieces of the birds excess feathers that they don’t need. It helps the bird and they will tell you how often you should get them clipped. Don’t let the bird fly in a room it doesn’t know and first start in a small room cause the bird will injure itself not knowing where to land. don’t even take him out of his cage untill he trusts you. speciallly if he wont let you let him perch on your finger.

It’s hard to tell whether a male or female but the store can help.
males are more aggresive and will try to peck you and they are more vibrant in color and they are more vocal.

another great tip is if you place a mirror eventualy in their cage they will sing to it and court the mirror its cute

    hope i helped :)

O ya btw when cockateils pick their feathers be careful cause they do do it when bored. I mean they do preen themselves or wash themselves but they can shread their wings and itll be hard for them to fly afterwards go to the vet if they continue its normally when they aren’t being paid attention too
