Why is the Goldfinch the only finch that can eat upside down?

I live in So. Calif and have recently become interested in bird feeding. I have feeders for thistle that finches like and have heard that the Goldfinch (vs the common Housefinch) can eat upside down. There are feeders that accomodate this trait just for the Goldfinch without attracting the Housefinch. Does the Goldfinch range include So. Calif and will this special feeder induce them to feed? Finally, what is it about the Goldfinch that enables it to eat upside down while the other finches cannot?

Q: I want to feed the garden birds, but what do I need to get started?

There’s never been such a variety of bird foods available on the market – choice is good, but where do you start? Bill Oddie’s advice is to keep it simple. Two good quality bird foods: Premium Mealworm Crumble tiny.cc (for ground/bird table feeding birds) and Premium Garden Friendly tiny.cc (for birds feeding from bird feeders) is just about all you need to cater for most of the birds that will visit your garden. This bird guide tiny.cc will help you to challenge your friends in a bird ID competition, but if you win you have to share the prize with the Bill Oddie’s bird food team!!
