Are you a bird lover?

I love to watch the birds in my yard, my favorites are the bluebirds and the orioles. I usually have two suet cakes hanging from a shepards hook for them the feed on. The last couple of days though something has managed to knock the feeders down and eat the entire suet cake, do you think this could be those pesty bluejays or something else. We live on 5 acres with lots of trees around and lots of wildlife. If you think it is the bluejays which are very agreesive then do you have suggestions on how to get rid of them?

Eastern Bluebirds defending the nest box from Tree swallows

A pair of Eastern bluebirds were being harassed by a pair of swallows or a pair and additional more. Eastern Bluebirds were alarmed and tried to avoid big fight. But finally male had to go on toes to toes fight, pinning swallow to the ground and in the vegetation (which I could not film as they were too fast tumbling around), but you may see a flash of blue in the grass during their fight.

Fledgling Western Bluebirds vs. Crows?

I have western bluebirds that have left their nest box. The parent birds are still very protective of the nest box whenever I get close to it even though it’s empty. I’m assuming that the fledglings must still be close by. There are quite a few large black crows hanging around my yard. Do they eat baby birds?

I’ve got a bluebird box that bluebirds do attempt to nest in, however, wasps run them out before they lay…

What can I do to keep the wasps from nesting in the box as well? This has happened three years in a row now, and I feel for the bluebirds. Invariably, I find the wasp nest after I notice no more activity by the birds, and even though I remove the wasps, the birds do not come back.

Rear Yard Carolina Chickadee Nestbox

Short video showing the setup of the rear yard nest box. The hole reducer (1 1/4 inch) was put on after the nest was started. The light tan color makes the interior of the box cooler in hot weather. Top of the box is 6 feet off the ground and the green plastic baffle is from Lowes garden dept. Pole is metal and greased to discourage predators. To feed mealworms I highly recommend the cage type as seen to the left of the nest box. The 1 1/2 inch mesh allows bluebirds, chickadees, titmice and smaller birds only to enter. I feed the bigger birds in my other feeders. Location: Myrtle Beach, SC
