Parrotlet Breeding Questions?

I have a female and a male parrotlet, they are in the same cage. They have been “mating” for a while now and i put a nest box in the cage. She stayed in the box all night but theres no eggs. She keeps going in and out of the box and is very aggressive when i even go near her cage. Im positive shes pregnant(whatever you call it for birds) But shes not laying eggs! and shes been all crazy like this for almost a month. When will she lay eggs?

Also, some days she doesn’t even go in the box and other days shes in a lot.

Discouraging Breeding?

Hi!

I took everyones advice, and I closed off the nesting box with a small piece of untreated wood so it is covering the entrance hole, and they can’t get through it, or chew it. And I am going to buy a new cage soon. But, however, I still see some complications.

1. I tried the dummy egg method, with eggs the size of their eggs. Didn’t even work! They just kicked the eggs out of the small nest they made at the bottom of the cage. And even though she laid two eggs (that I’m not taking away or she’ll lay more), Diablo (male) still tries to mate with Grey Grey (the female)!

2. We tried taking out all nesting materials, such as hay, paper, or anything else, put they are nesting in a pile of their food, and they dropped one of their cuddle toys so they sit on the eggs on that. So they always find a way to nest! And I can’t take away all of their toys, because they have about six toys, and they can probably make a nest out of them, too.

3. I tried keeping the light hours down to ten hours (thanks Nixity!) and it actually stopped them from mating for about two days, then they were back at it. That did help, but they still like to defy the odds.

4. Their diet (when I DON’T want them to breed) consists of daily vegetables, little bit of fruits, seeds, and some pellets. They also have a cuttle bone (which they need), and a mineral block, because they love it! Oh, and a mineral perch, but I don’t know if it counts. And I don’t think it is a breeding diet, is it?

5. I was thinking (thanks Aurican H for the help), but she/he stated to freeze or hard boil the eggs, which is a good plan! But what if the eggs are fertile? It makes my stomach feel queezy think about doing that to a live egg. Is there a way that I can maybe, like stop, the hatching process and put it on hold so it can’t hatch until Grey stops laying?

Thanks to anyone who helps, or has helped. I have tried everything I can think of, but still, get babies! This is her second clutch, she probably laid a third egg tonight or tomorrow night, and this is her second clutch. I really love this bird, well all of my birds, but I don’t want them to over breed or become chronic egg layers, or become egg bound. Please help me? Thanks!

Also, I am trying to stop them from breeding, and I want to put them on hold on breeding until more animals find more homes, and it isn’t such a problem, and until there is a higher demand for cockatiels. I am trying the best I can, but they still like to get it on. I try to give them breaks, give them proper nutrition (not the breeding diet), but they still mate! I can’t separate hem, they cry and cry and it is so sad. I am trying my hardest here, trying to stop them from breeding, get them healthy, and help all the other animals in the world. But please, don’t say I am a bad owner, I am trying!

How to Discourage Breeding?

Hi!

I have two breeding cockatiels, Grey Grey, which is a lovely Normal Grey hen. And Diablo, a male Pied cockatiel. About a month and a half ago, they had five eggs and only one hatched. So the baby is a Pied cockatiel and is about a month and a half, too.

Anyways, guess what I found in the nest box today? Another egg. I know of all the problems over-breeding can cause, so shut up about that. That is why I’m trying to stop them, but they keep on doing the mating and eventually laying eggs.

1. I can’t remove the nest box. It is attached to the cage, and if I remove it, there will be a big gaping hole that could potentially harm them! And if there is a good breeder, they won’t allow there birds to be hurt. Plus the birds love to hang out and sleep in there.

2. I CAN NOT separate them! They have been together ever since they were a month old (the breeder we got them from abused them, and put all the birds together when they were a month and younger). They cry and cry for each other, and I feel so sad and put them back.

3. I can’t force them to stay in darkness, either, If they aren’t let out before 10:00 AM, they will let you know they want out. They scream and scream, and I let them have light. I can’t force a bird to stay in darkness!

4. I try to avoid all nesting materials, or anything they can portray to be nesting materials. But it is kind of hard when they like their food bowl, nest box (can’t remove it), and use their toys as nests, too.

5. And I’m NOT going to freeze my birds! People say to keep them in cold temperature, but they have no idea. They can get sick and die, get a cold, or get an illness. That is considered animal abuse, and I’m not going to freeze my birds.

Is there any way to keep my birds healthy and stop them from breeding? Above, I stated all the things I can’t do. I really don’t want Grey Grey to become egg-bound, or tire herself out. And everything I do, they still like to do the dirty. How do I SAFELY and EFFECTIVELY stop them from breeding?

This is her second clutch, both parents are healthy as can be, and are about a year and a half old, most likely older. And two clutches a year isn’t too good, either. Please help!
The adult bird in my icon is Diablo, the chick is Cup-Cake (he’s bigger now, over a month) and the eggs are their last clutch.

Breeding cages or nest boxes in flight area ?

Can anyone advise me on which is best,
1) nest boxes in the flight area allowing my 2 sets of birds to just have a “free for all” attitude or
2) put them 2 sets into their own private breeding cage and let them get on with it.
I have had 2 answers from bird loving friends but one said colony breeding with nest boxes and the other said hand picked certain birds in private quarters. I am so confused now HELP…

Female Parakeet Breeding?

Dear Yahoo! Answers Members,

Hello, I have a female parakeet, and it’s species of parakeet is budgerigar. Sunbeam (female parakeet) is showing many of the signs, such as:

Puffier Vent/Bottom-
Sunbeam’s vent/bottom isn’t large, but it does look a little bit puffier, and she’s not trying to drop feces. I’ve seen some pictures of a puffy vent/bottom, and I think Sunbeam is in the early stages of it.

Droopy Tail-
Sunbeam’s tail is a little droopy, but it’s not broken. She can move it up and down, back and forth, and some other ways, but she likes to keep it droopy. P.S- I heard that this is how they protect the eggs when they came out.

Dark, Secluded, Quiet Places-
Sunbeam absolutely hates loud, bright, and busy rooms! She will stay in her cage (the top is always covered, but the front is open, so it’s dark), or go to our closet. She will stay there for a pretty long period of time. Also, Angel is always near or next to her. And if he leaves, she will not stop chirping until he does come back.

Larger/Smellier Dropping-
Sunbeam has been having extremely stinky dropping, and they are a bit larger than normal, too.

Angel (male/mate) has been showing signs of them being a breeding pair, also.

Near/Next To Sunbeam-
Angel loves to be by Sunbeam twenty-four/seven, except for eating or drinking. When he leaves, Sunbeam doesn’t like it. Also, Angel doesn’t like to leave, for example, if you’ll pick him up, he flies over to where Sunbeam is. Sometimes he’ll stay for a little bit and rub his head against mine (he only does this to me), then he’s off to Sunbeam again.

Soft (Nesting?) Materials-
Sometimes when we carry our three hamsters (long-hair Syrain, Robo, Russian dwarf) into the living room to play and let them run around, they drop hay to the floor, and Angel swoops down, picks it up with his beak, and carries it back to Sunbeam. He also does this with tissue boxes. He will sit on the box, and actually pull out about three at a time, and carry one at a time to Sunbeam. He does this a lot.

Aggressive/Territorial-
We have two other birds, which are Normal-Grey cockatiels. Whenever they get close to Sunbeam, he will bite them, harass them, and a lot of other things. Today, Grey-Grey (female cockatiel) was sitting on my shoulder and I went to clean their water/food trays, and Angel flew on my should and attacked her! He also does this to animals, humans, and inanimated objects! He also walked up to our Cockerspainel, and bit his ear! Angel is only a little budgie, and he’s getting way to cocky and over-protective of her.

I’ve asked this question, and everyone says that I’m going to have little birds running around. Also, I thought about breeding them, but I changed my mind. I was going to the pet store that exact day to buy a new cage for Sunbeam, and Sunbeam was showing the signs! So I don’t have a choice. Also, I do have eight responsible and loving homes lined up for them. But I do have a couple of questions, though.

Mutations-
The female/mother is a Lutino budgie with some spots of green on her. The male/father is an Albino male, with red eyes. They are both budgerigars. I was wondering was mutations I could get? Could one be like its father, a Albino? Or could one be a Lutino like its mother? Or both, a combination of Lutino and Albino? What would I most likely get?

Calcium/Nutrients-
I heard that powdered milk is good for calcium? I have a cuttle bone in there, actually two. What are some other ideas about calcium?

Handling-
I haven’t been handling Sunbeam, but my dad says that her about to lay eggs makes no difference. How can I tell if she broke an egg inside of her? Also, should I leave both male and female in the cage, or should I let them out? I put their cage on the floor, leave the door open, and they crawl in and out (mainly Angel) and they come and get water and food whenever they want. Should I keep them in their cage all day? Also, what are the early symptoms of being egg-bound?

Breeding My Parakeets?

Hello, I am trying to breed my parakeets but the female (Sunbeam) won’t let the male (Angel) mate her. He’s tried about ten times to day, and he tries to mount her from behind, and puts his foot on her, as if he’s kicking her. So I know he’s ready to mate. She is a year, and so is Angel. Will she give in and be mated?

I have taken them to a Avian vet twice this week. Once for genetic problems, and the second time for a body exam to make sure Sunbeam will be okay when she has the eggs inside of her, and when she lays them. And Angel had to get his nails clipped, that’s all. The Avian vet said that they were good for breeding, and he gave me a hand-feeding formula for the parakeet chicks in case I choose to hand-rear them.

He gave me several books on breeding parakeets, hand-feeding, and raising the chicks. I read all three and I know about the health issues, deformations, and mutilation from the parents. I know that I need a nesting box, that I’m going to buy today, and the female needs calcium, I know all that. I know plenty about parakeets.

My Avian vet gave me some sort of calcium supplement to mix with her food, and powder calcium supplement to mix with her water. He said that I should feed her plenty of fruits and vegetables.

As for the homes, I have friends lined up that will give them good homes, and they know how to care for them. And yes, i do understand birds die everyday, I work at an animal shelter, so I know that. But I want to breed them, and I take care of birds and other aerial animals every other day, so I think I’m good with the whole animal shelter thing.

The breeder that I got her from, has had one huge aviary, and there was many females and males there. Also, I do have another female named Highlighter, which likes to play with Sunbeam. I understand stress, but the vet says she’s perfectly fine, she isn’t stressed, doesn’t pluck her feathers out, she’s a little hyper, but still, he said that she’s a very serene bird.

I am responsible enough to breed them, and I’m ready for it. A kid doesn’t ask its parents if can breed bird without the child being responsible and the parents say yes. I don’t think that happens. Also, if I do breed them, and the parents mutilate/neglect them, I will be home schooled so I can feed them every hour or so. My Aunt works at the veterinary clinic so we get a discount, and I do have enough money to take them to the vet if anything happens.

Yes, I have a extremely strong passion for animals, I’m ready for this.

I’m just saying, because I’m just wanting to know if she will breed with him. Angel tries a lot, so will they be able to mate?
