How do you care for a duckling?

I am looking after a duckling until it is big enough to go outside with a flock of ducks and not be eaten by a cat (like its 5 other siblings were). I am currently feeding it cat food and keeping it in a large cardboard box with a covered hot water bottle, a blanket, food, shallow water, and a 60 watt light above for warmth. I have been told chicken mash or starter mix is the best food where can I get this from? I am able to get royal canin or hills dry cat food for free, is this good food? I know someone who feed a diet of mainly cheap canned cat food and their duck lived but the feathers grew twisted. I asked at a pet shop and they said I should just take the duckling to the local botanic gardens and it will fend for itself (its about 3 days old). I asked at a vet clinic and they reccomended bread and milk, I know that bread is too salty and milk is bad for birds ( they actually admitted that they didn’t know if the ducks raised on this formula surived to adult hood)
It is 44g
I got the duckling from a tame flock its not a wild one. The flock is owned by the manager of the cattery I work at, one of the other workers is from the only animal rescue/shelter in the area, and I can try to get advice from her, I am experienced at looking after animals as I am a vet nurse.

How do you take care a baby bird when it fell?

I found 4 baby birds on the ground, yes i did found 4 today, and they are really small, and have not opened their eyes yet, they are newborns from what my parents said, just hatched. they were in my back yard, and i have not seen any big birds lately, and i tried putting them in a cardboard box with tissues with a ladder on top, but the parent didn’t get them. I want them to grow big and healthy so i can release them into the wild. yes they are wild birds.

Will my cockatiel eggs hatch?

2 out of my 3 cockatiels started laying eggs. I have 2 females and a male. One of the females is alone, and the two others are together (they are brother and sister). I wasn’t expecting the eggs to hatch, but the brother and sister managed to knock one of the eggs out of their nesting box. (It’s not a real nesting box, it’s just a cardboard box with a hole in the front.) When I was looking at it I held it up to the sunlight (very briefly of course, so I didn’t get a really good look at it) and I could see something in it. It was almost as big as the egg but not quite. It looked pink from what I could see. Could this have been a baby bird? Or was it just an unfertilized yolk? They laid the eggs around late April or early May. I am not sure about the brother and sisters eggs, but I know that the female bird that is alone eggs won’t hatch because the male hasn’t been anywhere near those eggs. I just didn’t want to take the eggs away because they seem to like sitting on them and I didn’t want them to lay more. I know how much calcium it takes from their little bodies. They eat special food with calcium vitamins in it. If they are going to hatch, when will they hatch?

~Thanks~

Baby birds in thunderstorm?

Every year a Carolina wren builds a nest on our back porch and raises babies. This year she has four and they’re out of the nest (used to be five) They’re huddled up under the porch stairs in between some firewood. There’s a large storm coming and where they are is where the gutter run off goes, easily 2in of water. I placed a cardboard box with some towels in it on a pile of mulch about 6in from the ground. If the babies start to get wet, will the mother move them into the box? Or should I move them myself? (touching a baby bird does NOT cause it to be rejected by it’s mother, btw) I really don’t want them to drown!
Thanks for the help everyone, I went back outside and they were COVERED in water. The poor things were huddled even closer to the ground even though there was water running into them. I moved all four into the box (11″ x 8.5″ x 5.5″) which was maybe 10in from where they were. It’s elevated and has a dry towel inside. They seem to be ok now :)

Why is our male cockatiel so possesive over a cardboard box?

Our male cockatiel is about 9 yrs. old and he loves to explore in dark places. I took a 8 x 8 cardboard box and cut a hole in it and placed it on the floor. When I take him out to play and run around he has become so possessive over this box. He attacks you and screams if you come near it. He loves to go into and just pecks away at the cardboard and will come out in his own good time but refuses to allow anyone around it. He is an only bird, there is no mate. Are we confusing him into thinking this is a nest?
