I have a broody hen. We only have two hens(a buff orph and a barred rock) and they are in a raised coop that is 6 feet long. They only have one nesting box between the two of them. The have a run that is around 11×6 feet. The buff has become broody. She will not leave the nesting box. We have taken the eggs from her as they are not fertilized and she still sits there. We have decided to let her hatch some eggs. A friend has a rooster that we are going to borrow and get some eggs for her to hatch. I didn’t know if I have to separate the two hens or can she continue to sit in her normal nest? I don’t want either bird, especially our non broody bird to think she is being isolated. Will I have a problem if I don’t separate the birds? Can I leave the nest they way it is and then move the hen and the eggs closer to hatching day into say a dog crate that sits in the the run with the other hen? Any suggestions would help.
We have decided to not do the rooster thing and I bought a dozen fertilized eggs today. We will slip them under her tonight. I just am wondering if she and the chicks are going to have to be separated from the barred rock or if they will all get along. I think I will just watch them and intervene if necessary.
