baby bird found?

While vacationing in Central Wisconsin I found a baby bird floating in the lake, about 100 yards from shore. It is NOT a water bird. I picked it up and brought it inside, wrapped it in towels and dried it off. I didn’t think it’d make it, but it’s doing okay. It has all of its feathers but still cannot fly. I’m feeding it a combination of wet dog food, sow bugs, moths, crickets, maggots. The thing eats anything. My question is what kind of bird is it? I’m a seasoned bird watcher but this one has confounded me. It’s about 4 inches, no tail feathers, charcoal grey back, grey belly. Beak is like a starling (not yellow though, just the shape). It constantly squawks. Non-stop, only at night when he puts his head under his wing to sleep does it stop squawking. Any ornithologists out there who can help me figure out what the heck this thing is?

Thinking of getting a Bearded Dragon?

I am thinking of getting a bearded dragon. I have had alot of pets (dogs, cats, birds, rodents…etc.) over the years and am fairly experienced at keeping pets, but I have never had a lizard of any kind. I was told a Beardie was a good first lizard. I need advise on feeding and especially housing. Are crickets better then worms? What is the best housing? I was looking up habitats on petstore sites, but I don’t know what’s better, the aquariums, or the screened cages. It seems like the airflow in the screen cages wouls be better, but I am worried the lizard will damage it and escape, and one reviewer on one site said he had problems with CRICKETS eating the screens! Also, what is more important to the Beardie, floor space to strech out, or head space to climb up (a long enclosure or a high enclosure)? If you know a good website to order good habitats from that would be apreciated! ThanX.

my brother and i found quite a large baby bird in my backyard the other day. it had been sitting there all day. when we looked up to try and replace it back in a nest we saw nothing near us that looked like one. i brought the baby bird back into my house and since i work at a petstore im keeping it in a box with shavings some cotton and a towel. yesterday it ate some crickets and seemed to keep a few of them down. this morning i woke up and tried to feed it again and it does not seem to want to eat. my boss said that i should call some wildlife person but since i live in the middle of who knows where kansas im not sure where i need to call. does anybody know any wildlife “people” i can call to help me?

Feeding Purple Martins

This video, narrated by Purple Martin landlord Larry Melcher, shows how to train your martins to accept supplemental feeding. Very entertaining! This is very important. Martins can literally starve to death when weather turns too cold, windy and/or rainy for natural insect flight, early in Spring when the oldest of martins return to last years safe breeding sites. There is no reason to just let nature take it’s course, and lose martins, when this simple, fun, life saving tool is at landlords disposal. Although it takes some time to train your martins, once you do, you will not only have fun feeding your martins, but since their natural instinct is to only catch flying insects — while flying — martins can starve when bad weather lingers for over 3 or 4 days. Save your martins. Have fun doing it. Learn how to supplemental feed. Training is best achieved when the martins are hungry after a few days of no natural occuring insect flight.

Snake or Bird?

I would like something to pet and I don’t want it to bite that much. I might not play with it every day but I don’t want it to squrim or try to run away from me when I play with it. What type of snake or bird should I get? It has to be in a reasonable price. The down side with the snake is that I have to feed it mice, but some of them eat crickets. The downside with the bird is that it makes too much noise, and I think it’ll be harder to play with and pet.
