Mating Cockatiels, advise?

I often personally rescue animals and try to find them a new home once they are healthy and sociable, if I don’t become attached that is. In the beginning of December, I was referred to a home that had a pair of cockatiels that were living in an extremely unhealthy habitat. They were not being fed or watered properly, they had mold growing in the water dish, droppings inches deep on the bottom of the rabbit cage that they were being kept it and one had a severe eye infection, they were not vocal, they were scared, dirty and over all unhealthy. I was able to take possession of the tiels, I got them clean, healthy and the eye infection taken care of and of course, became attached. I assumed that they were the same sex (I know some will not accept a cage mate of the same sex, but it is not impossible) because they had never mated before but I also knew that their stressful environment could also be the problem. Then about two weeks ago, I noticed that they had started to mate. I’ve caught them in action 3 or 4 different days. I know that it can take around 20-30 days for her to lay her first clutch of eggs and then another 20-30 days for them to hatch, I have consulted with a local pet store that also raise birds and they helped me pick out a calcium supplement for the bird to lay healthy hard eggs and also helped me to pick out a nesting box. What I’m wondering is, how likely is it for them to try to mate if they are of the same sex? I do know that some dogs, whether it be two males or a female in heat will often try to mate with another dog of the same sex, cats not so much (though a friend of mine had a cat and dog that tried to mate on occasion). How do I know that they are actually mating and not just relieving their natural sexual frustration? Do I just wait to see if “she” lays eggs? Also, when they lay and they do hatch, is it best to hand raise them or let the mother and father raise them (yes, the father will help the mother)? I’ve always dealt with rescuing dogs and cats, so I’m a little lost when it comes to birds.

I’m sure that this question seems weird and possibly crazy, but it is a serious question and I do ask for only serious responses! Any true advise would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks so much! The pet store did in fact say no grit or crushed oyster shells because they may eat too much and it may become compacted in their stomachs. They told me to just use the reptile calcium supplement once, maybe twice a week sprinkled on their food and I was not advised to add anything to their water. Since I got them, I’ve been giving them vitamin drops in their food and it really did seem to help them become healthy faster. They gained weight, their feathers became much more normal and I’ve experienced no problems with the birds since I’ve had them.

what do I feed a rooster and 2 chickens who were abandoned and now are living in the woods behind my house?

The people behind me threw them into the woods, I’m assuming they got tired of them. I feel badly for them and they are now starting to get into my fenced in yard to eat bird seed under the feeder. Problem is I have 2 dogs who don’t like them at all. They’ve made a home in a brush pile and have been there for 2 weeks so it doesn’t look like they’re going anywhere. Any help on what to do for these poor little guys would be appreciated! Thanks

How can I get my family to be more responsible? Examples listed below.?

I am running myself ragged here. My husband wants all these animals…ie: 2 dogs, 2 birds, a rabbbit and a horse. Although he takes care of the horse I am left with feeding, watering, cleaning up after all the other animals. I didn’t want pets to begin with…to me it’s an extra responsibilty I did not want to havre to take on. Another example my daughter wants a rabbit so after telling her she would have to water, feed and clean it’s cage….it always ends up me doing. She is only 5 so I understand if she forgets without being reminded but I end up doing it all. Im tired of it all and ready for some kind of change or I think the animals need to go. Another example I can tell him to clean up the dog mess and he says ok I will tomorrow or this afternoon and doesn’t do it, in the meantime if my 80+ yr. old neighbor says something to me and I mention it to my husband he usually gets it all cleaned up within a few hrs. or the next day. What gives?!?!?!?
I agree no 5 y/o is responsible enough to handle animal care of their own…I told my husband this….No-one listens…they live in the moment…not that these animals will be around for the next 15-20 yrs…I even went as far to telling my husband I spoke with a lady who raises bunnies and she told me the same thing, we should wait.

My dogs eats its own “Poop” and more. HELP!?

I have three Shitzu`s and of course I am thinking maybe they got their name Shitzu from the bad habbit they have, but seems if only the 2 females do it only. They eat their stuff right after they do it.Sometimes the other female will sit in the back of the other female and as the droppings are falling out she eats it.LMAO…this is a for real question,NO JOKE. Now I live near a farm and there are chickens that come into the yard and do their stuff and the 2 females eat it up like “CRACK”! …..LMAO
Whats going on!? What do I do? Will the chicken Poop make them sick, give them the bird flue or something?I know its gross..lol..but advice is needed. And no i cannot move or feed them spicey food..lol. Thx

Do you think certain people are born with an inherent affinity for animals and nature?

I have a natural repoire with animals, certain kinds in particular.. I feel I was born this way and those who know me have noticed and think the same…. It is especially strong with cats, dogs and wild birds… It’s wierd, like I can make them trust me instantly… I think it is the strongest with wild birds, they are utterly fascinating to me and I have been able to walk right up to a wild chickadee and coax it to perch on my hand, no food, out in the middle of the bush I just walked up and put out my hand, the bird got on and let me stroke its feathers and hold him up to my face to look in his eye before he fluttered off. This kind of thing happens alot to me, and I never feed the birds, but they let me walk right up to them and sometimes touch them and they never act scared, its like they ignore me because they know im not a threat…. Does anyone else have a gift with animals like that?? Do you think people are born that way or is it just personality??

I recently puppy sat for someones 3 dogs during thanksgiving week. One of the dogs came from a litter of puppys my dog had 3 months ago. When she got back from her trip she refused to pay me for the work I did saying it was very irresponsible of me to forget the key . I.During the week I had sadie again I felt something was wrong she was acting like an abused dog. So when she came to pick them up I refused to give her back and and refund 50 to her.
