Raising Baby Parakeets?

we decided a month ago to let a pair or our parakeets hatch their own eggs out, after a lot of research and stuff. It was her first time, so the eggs never hatched. Then, we took a different pair, who had already bonded, and put them in a separate cage. Toddra, the female parakeet, sat on the eggs and barely got off. Her nest box is a wooden box with 1 hole and a cover that lifts up. A few days ago, I found out some exciting news; one baby chick had hatched! It had hatched a day or two ago, without anyone knowing. Toddra has been sitting on the small, bald chick. It was peeping a lot, so it’s strong and seems healthy. Toddra is fed seeds, a formulated egg diet for extra protein and calcium, and some veggies and fruits, such as apples and celery. So since the mother is feeding the chick, it’s getting a pretty healthy diet. My question is, do we just let Toddra take care of the chick until it’s old enough to leave the nest? If so, at what age is it old enough to live on its own(such as eating solid foods, drinking water, etc.)? Some people take them at 10 weeks and they feed them a special baby bird formula, but we don’t have the time to feed the chick 4x a day. Toddra and the father seem to be taking good care of the chick, so we aren’t really worried about her not feeding it or something like that. Any info on baby parakeets would be great!(not for raising them ourselves, but for knowing when they can live on their own and stuff like that) Thanks!

is something wrong with my parakeets?

they’re making some noise now but they don’t move a whole lot or play with the toys i gave them. i put in a nesting box but they don’t go in it. this is my first time with parakeets but my family has been raising canaries and some miniature parrots since i was 5, so i’m not a beginner with birds. i don’t buy birds at pet stores so these were from a breeder. she said they’d had babies before and that the female would probably lay eggs soon. they’re better than they were a few days ago but i’m still wondering, am i doing something wrong?

parakeet doesn’t look pregnant anymore?!!?!? please help!?

She looked preggers for about 2 weeks. Her stomach was huge and she looked like she had an egg towards her “exit”. Whenever she went up on her swing, it would tilt cause she was soo heavy. We got her a bird box and some nesting materials that the lady said to use at pets mart so she could start nesting a few days ago..and the next day she didnt look pregnant anymore! so we looked in the box…nothing. no egg..nothing. We have been looking all over her cage and theres nothing in sight so were wondering if she was really pregnant or not..

Whats the deal dudeeee?!?!

lol thanks :)
of course theres a male in the cage..idiot.. lol
and yes..we feed her leftover egg shells.

Why does my cat wander off for a few days?

My cat is a stray that I started feeding about 1 year ago. He is healthy now as I have gotten his shots and vaccinactions.
He gets into a lot of fights with this big orange cat which I don’t know if it’s a male or female. It’s always trying to eat his food.
He is mainly an outside cat because I don’t like litter boxes. I let him in while I’m home during the evenings and in the winter I let him stay in until I leave for work at 6am.

I’ve noticed lately when he goes out he goes across the street to the neighbors driveway, up it and to the back of their house. I went back there one day to investigate but didn’t see anything interesting or anywhere that he could go like under their house.

For the past few days he’s been gone for 2 days/nights straight. He came home yesterday because he was starving. Right after he ate he was ready to go back outside. He sat on the porch and meowed weirdly like these long heavy meows. There were a lot of birds in the yard.

i think there is a problem for my baby cockatiel?

ok so its about 1 month and a few days, so it should be getting out of its nest box soon, but the box is high above the ground in the aviary. Is it ok for the baby bird?

Eggs have gone.. :S ?

Okay, we have a bird aviary (not very big) and we have 4 budgies in there, so two males, two females and they are in pairs.. So two had 3 eggs and layed it in there nesting box and then a few days later they weren’t there and I saw a dead really young baby bird outside but not trace of any other birds or eggs.
The other pair kept hanging around there and one couple lost two eggs, which got dropped on the floor, we aren’t sure which couple it was, but my nan said she saw the other couple (without eggs) mating.

So where and why do you think the eggs in the nesting box went?

parakeet breeding question!?

My two parakeets are spending A LOT of time in their nesting box. When they do come out, they usually stay right in front of it and don’t move. And, they both go in there together. Sometimes the female will poke her head out of the box and then go back in. If one bird goes out, the other one stays in the nest box, and if the other doesn’t come back in, then it will eventually come out. This has been going on for a few days now, and I’m wondering what’s going on in there. Why are they in there together? If there were eggs, wouldn’t the female be laying on them by herself in the nest box? I don’t know for sure if there are eggs, I haven’t seen them actually mate, but I see all the signs of the mating process. I.e. – feeding, preening, all that. They never leave each others side. I’m just wondering why they are in there together. Also, can the male lay on the eggs too? I know I just asked a lot of questions, but I’m just curious. I don’t want to check on the eggs because I’m scared I will scare them away from the nest.
