Serious question about a “gold crowned night heron”?

I’ve had a pair of these beautiful birds nesting/breeding in a tree in our front yard. We had a massive hail storm two days ago. One chick fell to its death yesterday sometime, one during the night and a third fell this afternoon–and lived. We found him when we got home. The parents have not been seen or heard from since the storm. He was terrified and couldn’t stand when approached. We put him in a box with a towel and some water and he soon calmed down. I called our wildlife department and they told me to leave him in a protected place near the nest. This is the problem…there is no protected place near the nest. The neighbors have a fairly vicious dog that frequently roams. There are also a couple of male toms that would enjoy killing this lovely bird. He’s quite large but unable to fly. I was afraid a leg was broken, but he finally stood up and took a few steps. The game officer said to feed him with minnows. We’re doing that…but I think mama is still feeding regurg. He figured it out pretty quickly, even trying to catch ones we put in the water dish, but the live fish he’s eaten are regurged within minutes…one still flopping. He did manage a couple of dead ones. He is still pooping and seems fairly calm. I was going to leave him in the box on top of the car (so if the parents came back, they could find him/her, but there is a storm coming and wind is going to blow the box off. I ended up putting the box in the trunk of the car and braced it halfway up. The bird can still stand and stretch, but is protected from the wind and rain—and hopefully, the animals, a little at least. I’ve been checking on him and he’s finally set back down. Is this a good thing? Or will the poor thing be dead by morning. I told my animal loving niece that we might not be doing the poor thing any favors. (She fed the minnows—using hemostats so she wouldn’t lose a finger. She’s even made grandad bring her back over so she could check on it about 10:30). Would it be better off dead at this stage? There nearest rescue/rehab is about an hour from here and he will go there if they will take him. There is a private “habitat” much closer and I plan on talking with them tomorrow. From what I’ve been able to find out, these are fairly rare birds, especially in Kansas. Is it better to try to save him or let him go peacefully?

I know this was really long…thanks for reading and for any real advice.
Yellow and gold seem to be interchangable. Thanks for the info about the food…I thought about the blender, but he’s been eating the minnows. Do you think canned tuna would work? I just checked on him and he’s up again and watches me closely, but doesn’t seem too upset. I hate that he’s hidden if ma or pa heron is around and looking for him.
I’ve got a fully clawed, 22 lb. cat inside that I took out to “look” at the bird. He took one look and tried to use my back as a ramp to get back inside. The bird, standing with it’s head up is 15-18″ or so tall. His beak is probably about 4″ long. His talons are long, but still very soft. We changed boxes to give ma and pa better visibility and he clung to the towel. He let me touch and loosen them without freaking. (we did use a towel over his head…it helped.)

I can’t find a picture of a juvenile or much info on them and I don’t know where to look. He has what look like very thick hairs standing randomly willy-nilly on his head…I assume this will one day be the crown.
That’s the one! We just had our 30 min. check in…he’s not happy, but he’s dealing with it…lol
And thank you again for your help!

Have you ever had a dream with…..?

talking animals or birds or bugs ,insects, fish, amphibians, reptiles and or whatever ..and what did they tell you, and did you learn anything, or did it make you laugh? or tell me about your dream!

I have had talking animal dreams…talking cats…and talking farm animals….but, the talking cats…I loved that dream….the cats hated generic cat food, in my dream!( I dreamt that I was cat sitting for a woman who even though she was allergic, would rescue cats….and she was never home to feed them….so she would hire cat sitters…like me! LOL!) The cats tried to speak to one other human…(cat sitter) but, he never would respond…so, they talked to me…and I ended up helping them out in the end..and found them all homes! I also made that lady, stop rescuing cats..if she wasn’t gonna be home, that much..and since she was allergic !! LOL!
I love cats…but, I also love animals too! Cats though, they are sometimes so funny, and quirky but also soooo loving…and so understanding and sweet! Luv ‘em! Meow! Tee hee!
to the moose dreamer…did you know that moose are apparently good luck charms?
Somebody a few years back told me this…she wore a moose around her neck!
IT is supposed to bring you a lot of luck!
I have two moose on top of my jewelry box….they are the ty.com animals…of two different types of stuffies…but I have them there to cheer me on! LOL!
I like all the responses…I also like the owl dream…very nice one! You are certainly blessed!

Have you ever said, “I’ll just lie down and rest my eyes for a few more minutes”…..and then……?

……next thing you know it’s 8:00am and you have to be at work in an hour…….so you jump up, shower, throw on your clothes, slap on some make-up, feed the dog, lock the house, run across the street and feed your neighbor’s five dogs, three birds and a fish (the neighbor is away on vacation), jump in your car, get caught in a funeral procession on the interstate, and STILL get to work with 5 minutes to spare?

WHEW!

I think I need to lie down and rest my eyes for a few more minutes…. : P

Biology question?

A species of bird with three-toed feet feed mostly on worms and crawling insects. Over a period of several thousand years, the ocean level rises, and the region where the bird lives is flooded. Over several thousand years or so, the birds’ descendants evolve webbed feet and begin to feed on fish. Is this an example of gradualism or punctuated equilibrium? Explain.

I just received 2 iguanas as a gift and I have no idea what to do with them??

I ordered an iguana cage online and I should receive it on Monday (they did come with one but I think it’s to small for them), I am feeding them lettuce and bananas but what do I do from there? I own dogs, birds, fish and snakes but I have never owned a lizard!

And also, they are not small…I would say just by looking at them that they are each over a foot long not including the tail.

Thanks!
What are all you people 3, get a life!

Questions about Ecology?

you have small fish feeding on microorganisms in the surf zone, and you see a school of bluefish offshore feeding on smaller fish, and several brown pelicans are diving and feeding on the bluefish. along the shore are other birds feeding on fish, fiddler crabs, and worms in the sand. Ghost crabs and fiddler crabs are moving in and out of their burrows feeding on decaying grass and fungi near the high tide zone.

What level would the brown pelican fit into?

A. First feeding level
B. Second feeding level
C. Third feeding level
D. Higher feeding level

Where would the ghost and fiddler crabs fall into?
A. Primary consumers
B. Secondary Consumers
C. Tertiary Consumers
D. None of the above

What to feed my baby duck?

I have read so many conflicting things. We had an adult duck adopt us. We loved her so much but a dog killed her. She was easy to take care of though. She caught most of her own food plus ate cat food, scraps, and my son always brought her home minnows and fish. So we just had to go get another one. But it’s tiny baby. We went to the feed store and got chicken starter. But she won’t eat it!!! We have to go catch her grasshoppers every day. I know you’re not supposed to give them bread but I tried mixing specs of bread with the starter food and she still picks through and only eats the bread. I tried shredded lettuce, broccoli, boiled eggs. What do I do with her? I also gave her some bird gravel and have it in her pen at all times. We are on social security so I just don’t have the money to buy crickets and feeder goldfish or guppies. She eats a dozen at a time? Also, is this normal? I feed her 12 grasshoppers twice a day. She ate 8 little goldfish at once. HELP.
Someone isn’t reading my question!!! I said I got chick starter, she won’t eat it. We live on 3 acres with lots of animals. She won’t eat greens, or boiled eggs. She ignores them. She will only eat grasshoppers and fish. She is yellow with a black tail. Not a wild duck. How do I get her to eat the chick starter???? That was my main question. Or any other suggestions on how to get her to eat what she is supposed to. Yes she is tiny. She has down, no feathers.
