I’ve read that styles of nesting boxes differ according to type of bird. Can anyone provide a link to a website that offers specific instructions in building one? I would like to place several pieces in my garden.

I bought a nest box for my parakeets and i dont know if its any good. It looks like the one in the link. http://www.smarter.com/bird_bedding_product_review—pr–ci-44–pi-177886.html#
The problem is my birds always go on top of it and try to carve it out. They never try to go inside of it. I was wondering if the box should have a perch on the outside or inside because my parakeets box has a perch in the inside and why they keep on trying to carve it out.
Do you think i should add soft material on the bottom?

Ok i have a nest box that looks like the second one down on the link http://www.nativeamerica.com/boxes.html… but the hole is larger and it isnt hollow, they gave it to me when i bought the birds is this a good nest box ,it isnt hollow but i’ve felt the wood and it is very soft it feels like sponge ,so they wont have trouble picking at it they have already started poking a deeper hole in it, should i be expecting eggs soon, i’ve seen the male balance on the female but i havnt seen any eggs.when should i expect the eggs?
