If you found a dying baby bird on your porch, what would you do?

I found a infant bird on my porch this morning which apparently fell from a nest. It was either paralyzed or too weak to move, but was breathing. Today is supposed to be very hot, and I fear that it will suffer or burn on the sidewalk.

I told a co-worker I would have shot it if I had lived in rural area. He called it wrong since it would be like playing God, and said he would put it in a shoe box and place the boxed bird in a bush which I thought was wrong since it would ensure a more slow death.

Neither of us wanted to touch the bird since we don’t know if it was ill or not.

Anyway, I’m just curious as to how other people would react to this situation.
EDIT: I don’t know why the question posted twice, but thanks for answering twice :)

I ended up not doing anything because I was late for work and didn’t even realize it was breathing until I was out the door. I’m hoping that other neighbors may have seen it.

Blossoms for the whole summer, and not having to wait 120 days?-Morning Glorys?

I am planning to start my Morning Glorys from seed now vs buying plants in spring. I want to have them blooming early and all summer vs waiting until well into the summer months.

Last yr our deck was such a “happy place” due to the many various birds feeding, bathing, and I think maybe stopping by to visit!! All this was from the security felt due to the coverage the birds had and not having the deck as a wide open space.

My plant zone(s) is 4-5. To the best of anyone’s knowledge, is there any reason why this would not be successful? I plan on transpanting them to the container which they will be in all summer out on the deck, as well as the necessities for them to start climbing inside until it is safe to put them out re: frost. We keep our temp @ 68 in house but I will have grow lights for them.

I welcome any thoughts and ideas for this.

are my lovebirds’ eggs fertile?

my lovebird, tiki, was put in a cage with 2 others that i have. the other 2 are siblings. at first they fought, but then one of the 2 mated with Tiki 2 times, and the other one stayed in a tunnel – and wouldn’t come out. the next morning, i separated them again because tiki had some blood on her beak. it has been a few weeks since this happened, and she has laid 3 eggs about 1-2 weeks ago. she is sitting on them in her nest box and she doesn’t have a pair. the problem is, i cant tell the 2 lovebirds apart so i cant just take one out for tiki. could the eggs be fertile? can i put the 3 birds back together? is it bad to have a lovebird alone in a cage, sitting on eggs?
thanks.

My Elderly Hen Canary is Dying…?

She’s surprised both of us by making it over the 7 year mark, but her feathers have grown increasingly shabby and she’s done very little flying over the last 6 months. Now she won’t leave the bottom of the cage although up to this morning she was still eating. As I write she sits in a corner, hunched, eyes closed, tail bobbing. She’s ignoring the nest I brought down to the bottom and stuffed with tissues for her. I was hoping it would keep her warm and take the stress off her toes.

Question: should I scoop her up and put her in a box or something enclosed at the bottom of the cage that’s lined with warm tissues or will that stress her even more before she goes? I know there is nothing more that can be done for her but I want her to pass feeling relaxed and happy. Keep in mind I have 4 cats including one teenager that would love to jump on the cage while she’s on the bottom. Her mate of 6 years, Floyd, is staying down on the lower perches to be near her. His concern is obvious, but the cats would freak him out, too. So should I move her into a small box inside the cage or not?

Thanks in advance.

PS: Her name is Geraldine, and for those of you who have interest, canaries are incredibly hardy and easy to care for and they have delightful personalities. Geraldine has been a singer all her life- only about 25% of the females sing. This is how she got her name, actually- we thought she was a Gerald because of the singing, until that first egg. Then Floyd came along and they’ve been together ever since, so he’s not exactly young either. She’s always been a happy and fun bird to have around. I’ll miss her : (
EDIT: Can’t wrap up or heat my cage because it’s a flight cage- 2ft deep 4ft high 4 ft wide. I love this cage- canaries do so well in it. Maybe I’ll try the hot water on top of the radiator in the room- and I’ll up the valve on the radiator. I can’t make her eat if she doesn’t want to…and she’s already over 7 years so I don’t know that any medication can help…the oldest I had a canary live to was 8. Thanks so much for advice…why do lousy people live forever and good pets die so young….?

Questions for God if and when we ever see Him, huh… ;)
UPDATE: 24 hours later, she’s still on bottom, looks a little livelier but still not good. Sweetest thing- Floyd is feeding her. Like he fed his babies over the years.
