I need some detailed explanations on how to care for a baby blackbird or crow. What are some suggestions?

My cousin (she’s about 11 and is always taking care of some kind of critter) was at her great grandmother’s house, my nextdoor neighbor, and a baby bird fell out of a tree in the back yard of the next house over. The bird hopped it’s way into my neighbor’s backyard where her dog decided to chase it. My cousin caught the bird before the dog even touched it, so there are no physical injuries to the bird, but we need to care for it until it starts learnig to fly. It is a fledgling, it has most of it’s feathers and just a little baby fuzz left, but it’s still somewhat on the ugly side. We think it was trying to learn to fly when it ended up in my neighbors yard. The mother is nowhere to be found, and it wouldn’t be safe outside with the dog running around. So we want to raise it until it can fly and feed itself. Are there any bird experts out there who can help me? Or does anyone have any good suggestions on good websites with good care information on baby blackbirds?

Help me take care of this baby bird, please!! :)?

My husband cut down a very dead pine tree today in our back yard. As he was chainsawing it into pieces, he discovered inside the tree 4 baby woodpeckers, 2 dead, 1 injured, and 1 that seems okay. We didn’t know what to do with them, considering that all the websites I researched said to place the birds back in their nest or somewhere near around there and the parents will come back to take care of it…… But, we live in South Alabama, where snakes are starting to come out in the hundreds, our neighbors have outside cats and dogs, and a storm is fast approaching as I type this….

So, we took a box, filled it with pine straw, grass, and whatever else we could find to make a “make-shift” nest, and nailed the box to the tree. I placed both the injured one and the seemingly okay babies in the box, hoping their parents would come to take care of them. This was early this morning. It is now 6 oclock at night. The injured bird is now dead, and the other is still alive. The “nest” we created is now filled with ants from the dead baby bird.

I have brought the other baby inside my home, and have called serveral vets who act like they could give a rats ass about this poor bird, i guess because today is saturday.

My question is how can I help keep this poor woodpecker baby alive until I can take it to a vet on monday. I know it is illegal to have any wild animal in a persons possesion, but I can’t just leave it out there in the storm, where the snakes, ants, or other animals can get it.

Someone please help me with some advice on how to help this poor thing survive until Monday. Thanks a million!

What can I feed a baby sparrow?

A nest of house sparrows was knocked over my a neighbors cat. The mom and most of the babies were killed.
Two of the babies lived, but one was severely injured so we killed it.
There’s one baby left and he/she is doing okay. We fed it dog food soaked in water a few times.
What else should we be feeding it? I don’t have any way to get get a petstore or do I have the money for the bird formulas.

We have it in a cardboard box with a heat lamp.
And before anyone mentions this, House Sparrows are NOT PROTECTED BY ANY LAWS.

A small bird has landed in my yard… what should I do to help?

A small bird has stayed in my hard, and won’t leave… it seems wounded and won’t fly. I temporarily housed it inside a cage because there are cats nearby (lots of them) the nest where the baby is from is empty, so apparently the mother is gone… what do I feed it? After I get the usual stupid answers, I would like some serious responses. I know it’s best to let the bird back into the wild, but the thing is hurt, and there are cats all over the area (I’m surrounded by lots of neighbors)

Helpful suggestions please
Thank you all for the ideas. Since we talked, the bird has died. There seemed to be nothing to do. It was too late (local vets closed)

Is there a way to keep my neighbors cat’s out of our yard?

So, to start out with I need to get rid of the cats constantly plaguing my yard.
They are using the yard as their own personal litter box, killing and eating the small birds that nest around my home, spraying my plants and killing them, the list goes on and on.
Asking our neighbors to keep them under control isn’t really an option because my family personally doesn’t get along at all with them. The problem with the cats has been going on since they moved next to us… 11 years ago! The problem has subsided somewhat because most of their cats are dying off from starvation or other diseases. (They had about 30) They’re down to about 10 now, but they’re still as much a problem as before.
Now that the situation has been explained, I can describe what I’ve tried to do to keep them away. I’ve tried shooting them with a water gun, used red pepper, mothballs, pretty much everything I could think of. I really don’t know what to do and am at the end of my ropes, the next thing I’m going to do is try trapping them and turning them into the SPCA or something. Unless someone can suggest something else, it’s what I have to do.
I’m getting tired of hearing the baby birds chirping at night in fear because a cat is climbing the tree to eat them.

Serious question about a “gold crowned night heron”?

I’ve had a pair of these beautiful birds nesting/breeding in a tree in our front yard. We had a massive hail storm two days ago. One chick fell to its death yesterday sometime, one during the night and a third fell this afternoon–and lived. We found him when we got home. The parents have not been seen or heard from since the storm. He was terrified and couldn’t stand when approached. We put him in a box with a towel and some water and he soon calmed down. I called our wildlife department and they told me to leave him in a protected place near the nest. This is the problem…there is no protected place near the nest. The neighbors have a fairly vicious dog that frequently roams. There are also a couple of male toms that would enjoy killing this lovely bird. He’s quite large but unable to fly. I was afraid a leg was broken, but he finally stood up and took a few steps. The game officer said to feed him with minnows. We’re doing that…but I think mama is still feeding regurg. He figured it out pretty quickly, even trying to catch ones we put in the water dish, but the live fish he’s eaten are regurged within minutes…one still flopping. He did manage a couple of dead ones. He is still pooping and seems fairly calm. I was going to leave him in the box on top of the car (so if the parents came back, they could find him/her, but there is a storm coming and wind is going to blow the box off. I ended up putting the box in the trunk of the car and braced it halfway up. The bird can still stand and stretch, but is protected from the wind and rain—and hopefully, the animals, a little at least. I’ve been checking on him and he’s finally set back down. Is this a good thing? Or will the poor thing be dead by morning. I told my animal loving niece that we might not be doing the poor thing any favors. (She fed the minnows—using hemostats so she wouldn’t lose a finger. She’s even made grandad bring her back over so she could check on it about 10:30). Would it be better off dead at this stage? There nearest rescue/rehab is about an hour from here and he will go there if they will take him. There is a private “habitat” much closer and I plan on talking with them tomorrow. From what I’ve been able to find out, these are fairly rare birds, especially in Kansas. Is it better to try to save him or let him go peacefully?

I know this was really long…thanks for reading and for any real advice.
Yellow and gold seem to be interchangable. Thanks for the info about the food…I thought about the blender, but he’s been eating the minnows. Do you think canned tuna would work? I just checked on him and he’s up again and watches me closely, but doesn’t seem too upset. I hate that he’s hidden if ma or pa heron is around and looking for him.
I’ve got a fully clawed, 22 lb. cat inside that I took out to “look” at the bird. He took one look and tried to use my back as a ramp to get back inside. The bird, standing with it’s head up is 15-18″ or so tall. His beak is probably about 4″ long. His talons are long, but still very soft. We changed boxes to give ma and pa better visibility and he clung to the towel. He let me touch and loosen them without freaking. (we did use a towel over his head…it helped.)

I can’t find a picture of a juvenile or much info on them and I don’t know where to look. He has what look like very thick hairs standing randomly willy-nilly on his head…I assume this will one day be the crown.
That’s the one! We just had our 30 min. check in…he’s not happy, but he’s dealing with it…lol
And thank you again for your help!
