Great tits (Parus major) nesting in my garden…should I check nest?

Until now I’ve kept well away from their nest box to make sure they feel safe, but recently (2 plus weeks have passed) the nestlings seemed to be quieter and called less frequently. Is this normal? I think they are ready to get out of the nest soon.

Also, I wonder what would happen should one of the nestlings die in the nest, the adult birds could not move it or could they? Should I check the nest when the adult birds are away to make sure all the young birds are doing well? Or just leave it up to nature and clean the nest after they’ve gone?

Wren Feeding Nestlings

This adult Bewick’s Wren is bringing live food into the nest box. You can hear the babies chirping when adult is near. The adult leaves nest “carrying out the trash.” This pair of wrens had two clutches this season, only a couple of weeks apart, each with at least 6 babies. The nest box is on its side because the adults built the nest and laid the eggs while the nest was resting on a shelf, waiting to be put up. Since the eggs were laid, we decided to put it up in the exact position we found it. We put it up quickly and the adults found it in less than 10 minutes. When the birds had fledged we opened the box and could see they used the door area as an entry chamber and the actual nest was in the corner furthest from the opening. Their favorite foods are spiders and larvae.

Deterring house wrens?

I have two nestboxes set up in my yard. One has a chickadee nest in it with 2-week old nestlings inside. The other is a titmouse nest that was built a week ago. Today a house wren went into the nestbox of the titmice, and I’m not sure if it punctured the eggs. I tried to cover the hole of the box somewhat to keep the bird out, but I was wondering if there are any tips for deterring house wrens. Thanks!
