I have two nestboxes set up in my yard. One has a chickadee nest in it with 2-week old nestlings inside. The other is a titmouse nest that was built a week ago. Today a house wren went into the nestbox of the titmice, and I’m not sure if it punctured the eggs. I tried to cover the hole of the box somewhat to keep the bird out, but I was wondering if there are any tips for deterring house wrens. Thanks!

Can feeding wild birds with peanuts during the breeding season harm the nestlings?
Until now I’ve kept well away from their nest box to make sure they feel safe, but recently (2 plus weeks have passed) the nestlings seemed to be quieter and called less frequently. Is this normal? I think they are ready to get out of the nest soon.
Also, I wonder what would happen should one of the nestlings die in the nest, the adult birds could not move it or could they? Should I check the nest when the adult birds are away to make sure all the young birds are doing well? Or just leave it up to nature and clean the nest after they’ve gone?

Blue titmice eat caterpillars. The birds would like lots of caterpillars around when they have young to feed, but they breed earlier than peak caterpillar season. Do the birds learn from one year’s experience when they time breeding the next year? Researchers randomly assigned 7 paris of birds to have a natural supply supplement while feeding their young and another 6 pairs to rely on natural food supply (control). The next year, they measured how many days after the caterpillar peak the birds produced their nestlings.
First, compare the two groups in the first year. The only difference should be the chance effect of the random assignment. The study report says, “In the experimental year, the degree of synchronization did not differ between food-supplemented and control females.” The report gives t = -1.05. What type of t statistic (paired or two-sample) is this? Show that this t leads to the quoted conclusion.
