My husband cut down a very dead pine tree today in our back yard. As he was chainsawing it into pieces, he discovered inside the tree 4 baby woodpeckers, 2 dead, 1 injured, and 1 that seems okay. We didn’t know what to do with them, considering that all the websites I researched said to place the birds back in their nest or somewhere near around there and the parents will come back to take care of it…… But, we live in South Alabama, where snakes are starting to come out in the hundreds, our neighbors have outside cats and dogs, and a storm is fast approaching as I type this….
So, we took a box, filled it with pine straw, grass, and whatever else we could find to make a “make-shift” nest, and nailed the box to the tree. I placed both the injured one and the seemingly okay babies in the box, hoping their parents would come to take care of them. This was early this morning. It is now 6 oclock at night. The injured bird is now dead, and the other is still alive. The “nest” we created is now filled with ants from the dead baby bird.
I have brought the other baby inside my home, and have called serveral vets who act like they could give a rats ass about this poor bird, i guess because today is saturday.
My question is how can I help keep this poor woodpecker baby alive until I can take it to a vet on monday. I know it is illegal to have any wild animal in a persons possesion, but I can’t just leave it out there in the storm, where the snakes, ants, or other animals can get it.
Someone please help me with some advice on how to help this poor thing survive until Monday. Thanks a million!
