How to stop zebra finch plucking?

My finches have got me at my wit’s end, at this point. :P

I just had to separate one bird from the flock (a total of 4, all males in a large cage.) because they kept pulling out the feathers on his back/above his tail.

This morning, I see that now 2 of the 3 boys in the cage now have bald spots on their back.

They have about 4 different types of nesting material, including hay, crinkly paper, and even soft stuff like angora fur and this stringy-material, and it doesn’t stop them.

At this point, should I just remove the box altogether? Will that stop this? I can’t imagine splitting them into 4 separate cages would be logical, but I don’t want them plucking each other bald…
They’re not moulting. I’ve had finches before, and I know what moulting looks like. They are plucking out each other’s feathers, which from what I read had to do with not having proper nesting material, but providing them with everything I can think of (and what was recommended by the breeder) is not working.
The nest was something recommended to me by the breeder, as a place for them to feel safe/sleep. They attempt to ‘breed’ with each other, but I obviously don’t want baby finches, so I went with all males.

I wasn’t trying to encourage the behavior, it was just what had been told to me would make them feel comfortable in their environment. I’m going to try taking the box out, and I really hope it means they’ll leave each other alone.

(I just don’t understand why if they have all sorts of materials to nest in already, ranging in texture even, why they are so obsessive about plucking each other?)

How many cc’s of hand-feeding baby bird food should I feed a 20 day-old cockatiel?

It’s that stuff called Exact. The little guy is about 20 days old. I read that he should be fed about 4 times during the day about every 4 hours and roughly 8 cc’s. I know how to hand feed but I’m just afraid of overfeeding him! I had to take him away from his parents because they were attacking him to the point the poor thing was bleeding! It’s hard to believe how brutal my friendly little pair of cockatiels were! They still have 2 babies left with them. One is four weeks old and the other is probably about 23 days old at the most. When should they start eating on their own??? I read that it is usually about four weeks that they start. I got these little “O” shaped pellet things for transition over to adult food. Can they eat millet as well? Should I put water and in there with them? AND FINALLY,(SORRY, SO MANY QUESTIONS!) WHEN WILL THEY LEAVE THE NEST BOX AND WHEN CAN THEY GO TO NEW HOMES???? THANKS SO MUCH! This obviously my first clutch but I’m learning.

Releasing a baby bird?

A friend of mine found a baby robin. It was a fledgeling and she didn’t know any better and thought it was abandoned. I know a FEW things about bird rescuing so she called me. We placed the baby back under the tree where she found it, and the mother is now feeding it again. Still…I’ve never raised one to the point of release. I’ve always taken the truly needy to the local rehab, BUT…I wanted to know if anyone knew how THEY rehabilitate baby birds to the point where they can be released and have a chance at survivial. Does anyone know how they teach wild birds to find the right foods, or if a rehabilitated bird will migrate like the rest of it’s species?

Merlin Hawk in Wisconsin?

During the winter, feeding the little song birds, a family of 3 bunnies and a possum is so enjoyable here in Wisconsin. BUT we have a merlin hawk taking advantage of our generosity, like we are feeding/baiting them for his killing convienence. He has killed one of our cats and attacked 2 others, many little birds and bunnies have fallen victim to this lazy killer. It has swooped at my husband in the driveway and at that point, signed it’s death warrant! I have called the DNR, they are protected, to a point. I have put out plastic owls and rotate them periodically, shiny things array the yard, whenever we get sunshine, they sparkle. It is full blown winter here and food is scarce for the birds who are use to feeding at our feeders~now and all year long. I can not just stop feeding them. I have bought a pellet gun and would love to blow that killer away but, by the time I spot him, open the door and take aim from the hip….he is airborn. What else can I do?It is a daily event.
