If you found a dying baby bird on your porch, what would you do?

I found a infant bird on my porch this morning which apparently fell from a nest. It was either paralyzed or too weak to move, but was breathing. Today is supposed to be very hot, and I fear that it will suffer or burn on the sidewalk.

I told a co-worker I would have shot it if I had lived in rural area. He called it wrong since it would be like playing God, and said he would put it in a shoe box and place the boxed bird in a bush which I thought was wrong since it would ensure a more slow death.

Neither of us wanted to touch the bird since we don’t know if it was ill or not.

Anyway, I’m just curious as to how other people would react to this situation.
EDIT: I don’t know why the question posted twice, but thanks for answering twice :)

I ended up not doing anything because I was late for work and didn’t even realize it was breathing until I was out the door. I’m hoping that other neighbors may have seen it.

Two cats wandered up to my back porch..?

4 days ago and havent left since. I love animals and couldnt just ignore them( I tried for the first night) so I started feeding them outside. I cant bring them in cuz my tom cat will not tolerate another pet in the house, it drives him nuts with them just being outside. He sits at the back glass door and stare and meows at them. Anyway..my family tells me that I shouldnt have fed them cuz now they wont go away and they are also leaving me lovely little dead bird “gifts” on my steps. It doesnt bother me having them here and they’re very sweet cats. Did I do the right thing by feeding them?
again—I do Not mind them being here, I only wish I could bring them inside without it turning into a war with the cat I already have

Baby birds in thunderstorm?

Every year a Carolina wren builds a nest on our back porch and raises babies. This year she has four and they’re out of the nest (used to be five) They’re huddled up under the porch stairs in between some firewood. There’s a large storm coming and where they are is where the gutter run off goes, easily 2in of water. I placed a cardboard box with some towels in it on a pile of mulch about 6in from the ground. If the babies start to get wet, will the mother move them into the box? Or should I move them myself? (touching a baby bird does NOT cause it to be rejected by it’s mother, btw) I really don’t want them to drown!
Thanks for the help everyone, I went back outside and they were COVERED in water. The poor things were huddled even closer to the ground even though there was water running into them. I moved all four into the box (11″ x 8.5″ x 5.5″) which was maybe 10in from where they were. It’s elevated and has a dry towel inside. They seem to be ok now :)
