baby bird found?

While vacationing in Central Wisconsin I found a baby bird floating in the lake, about 100 yards from shore. It is NOT a water bird. I picked it up and brought it inside, wrapped it in towels and dried it off. I didn’t think it’d make it, but it’s doing okay. It has all of its feathers but still cannot fly. I’m feeding it a combination of wet dog food, sow bugs, moths, crickets, maggots. The thing eats anything. My question is what kind of bird is it? I’m a seasoned bird watcher but this one has confounded me. It’s about 4 inches, no tail feathers, charcoal grey back, grey belly. Beak is like a starling (not yellow though, just the shape). It constantly squawks. Non-stop, only at night when he puts his head under his wing to sleep does it stop squawking. Any ornithologists out there who can help me figure out what the heck this thing is?

Training Birds to Enter Nest Box’s through “Doors” that can be Closed Behind them

Purple martins often die during cold snaps. They either starve for lack of insects or because their energy is exhausted by the cold environment. This author has had the sad experience of finding dead chicks and parents during nest checks at these times. Many martin landlords have solved the feeding problem by tossing food into the air near the martins but a good way to keep them warm has not yet been developed. This author has long dreamed about having some kind of “storm door” to reduce or eliminate heat losses from the nest box and so when it was noticed a starling was regularly entering a winter roost box (in MN), some tests were performed with some interesting results. In short, it appears this bird was capable of being trained to enter a cavity even though the “door” was completely closed off to the elements. It is hoped similar techniques can be used to train purple martins (and other birds) to do the same thing. It is interesting that one critic said that just because it worked for a starling, does not necessarily mean a purple martin can be trained. After all, it was pointed out; starlings are very smart birds. While that may very well be true, the obvious rebuttal is that, if starlings are smarter than martins, how is it that the starling is trying to keep itself warm in MN in Dec, Jan, and Feb while the martins are all in Brazil or, at worst, on their way back!

My Birdfeeders – Sparrows, Starlings and a pesky Squirrel !

This is a collection of footage of my birdfeeders in my garden. Filmed in late June 2007. I get lots of birds, mainly Sparrows, Starlings the odd Robin and a pesky Squirrel as you can see. The bird at 05:01 is a Sparrowhawk, the bird at 05:08 is a Wood Pigeon. Foodwise I put out peanuts, Sunflower hearts, wild bird seed and fat balls in a ball feeder. If you are not using a ball feeder then you need to remove the green nets as birds can get tangled in them. The Squirrel is a right pain as it quite often tries to knock the feeders onto the floor so it can eat the contents. I have even seen it do that and run off with a fat ball, the cheek of it !!! What wild birds do you get in your garden?

Monster Silver Arowana eats Bird

This my pride and joy. Gandalf, my oldest and largest Silver Arowana. My wife found an injured Starling in our front yard and it died of what seemed to be a spinal injury. We try not to waste anything, most importantly life. So I fed it to my fish.
