have baby parakeets, need info on them please!!?

my pair of parakeets have mated and the female laid 6 eggs. As of yesterday 3-24-09 the first egg hatched. This morning the 2nd egg hatched. What if any thing do I need to do. The female never would made a nest. We bought nesting hairs and put the box in the cage but she would not have any thing to do with it. So I had to put straw in the nesting box my self. She pushed a lot of it out of the box. The rest is spread out in a circle in the box.The babies are laying on the bottom of the box. Not the straw.Should I put more straw in the box? The cage is small and so is the nesting box. Should I put a bigger box in for a bigger nest? I want to do all that I can to help these little birds. I have enjoyed my bird very much even thow they will not let me touch them. We have had them for 1yr and 1 month. I got them from my nephew. Them raise birds on their back pourch. But they let the birds do all the feeding and raising of the babies.

How should I take care of my baby parakeets, when they hatch?

I’m very worried on how I should go about caring for my baby parakeets when they hatch, the hen is currently nesting her eggs, however in the past she’s laid a batch (1 hatched and died after a single day). I want to avoid the same thing from happening again, and I don’t have the heart to break the eggs like others who don’t want to go through the trouble do. The problem starts when the babies are first born. (about the first week or so) the mother doesn’t really know what to do when the babies hatch, and she just continues to sit there paying no attention to the baby at all. While I’m afraid to touch it since when they first hatch they seem so frail and soft, and I’m not sure if I should. I’ve bought a Nesting box for my hen, some bedding, and baby formula with a Syringe to begin the feeding, such as that I’ve seen on youtube. However I don’t think it’s possible to start feeding the baby birds 1-3 days out of the egg since their mouths are so small. What do birds eat when their 1-6 days old? When should I start hand feeding the birds? Should I take the hen out of the nest after the eggs hatch? How long should it be until I stop hand feeding the babies and introduce them to seeds? If there’s anybody out there who is an expert on baby Parakeets i plea to you, PLEASE help me!!

Dog Ticks! We have zillions! Any suggestions to eliminate them – praying mantis, poultry?

We live on a ranch in SD – the only thing I hate about it is the unbelievable amount of dog ticks every spring and summer. GROSS! I can remove a tick a minute (or faster!) from our animals but I’ll never get used to them. We do use a rub-on gel (Advantix I think?) and tick collars for the animals and I guess they help… We keep the ground cover near the house very short. I’m wondering if anyone has had any luck with a particular type of poultry (2 geese didn’t seem to make a dent in our tick population!) or maybe someone has tried praying mantis? Which wild birds would help the most – maybe I could encourage them through plantings and feeding? We have robins & sparrows around now. I would like to be more prepared this spring, if I can. Thank you for any help or suggestions!! ps I’m one of the only two people I know who tics never attach to – they must know how much I hate them! LOL
