Woodpecker — injured juvenile downy woodpecker?

We have an injured juvenile downy woodpecker and have made several calls to local avian vets, rehab facilities and wildlife sanctuaries. Thus far, no response. While I still hope to hear back from someone knowledgeable who can take him, what do we do if they don’t? He has an injured wing, but otherwise is in good spirits. If he survives his injury, but can not fly, what are the odds that we can raise him in captivity? We have managed to feed him a couple of mealworms, but after that….? Has anyone else done this or had experience with this kind of bird? Thank you in advance.

Why ask, if you don’t want the correct answer?

People ask what to do for a sick/injured/orphaned wild animal they found. At least 5 people tell them to call a licensed wildlife rehabilitator, it is illegal to keep any native wild animal in the US without proper permits. They pick as best answer the one that tells them how to take care of the animal themselves. What part of illegal don’t they understand?

A person asks what not to feed her pet bird. Several people tell her not to feed it chocolate, it is deadly to birds. They cite avian vets and websites of experts to back up their answers. She edits her question to tell everyone she feeds her bird chocolate and it does not harm it at all.

If you are only looking for an answer that agrees with your preconcieved notions, if you are going to do what you want to do, no matter what you learn here, why waste your time, and the time of the people who give thoughtful, well-researched answers?

I saw an article about water rising in San Francisco Bay, and how warming oceans have already changed wildlife

now I can’t find the article; it mentioned whale migrations and feeding patterns, and bird births dropping. Can anyone refresh my memory?

NOTES:1. The wildlife rescue is not interested. 2. I climbed the tree and I can’t find a nest. 3. It is not?

ready to leave the nest and ‘hop around on it’s own. He is not even fully covered in down. Seriously, this bird was about to die yesterday. He was barely moving. I gave him mashed worms and put him in a shoe box. This morning, he was looking a lot better. I can’t find baby bird formula in the stores.

My question is: Is feeding him parakeet seed okay? I cooked it and mashed it up for easier digestion. I haven’t fed it to him yet because I’m scared it will kill him. I don’t know what type of bird he is. If this isn’t okay, what should I feed him?

Feeding the animals during snow- are baby carrots bad for birds?

Well, I was thinking of chucking some decent but stale bread and veggies into the creek for the wildlife here in the NorthEast (I’m from Long Island and I have no clue up here- yet! :-) )
So, what can I toss and what do i have to send to the dumps to pile up?
Thanks!
Also, what I’m asking is- are whole baby carrots going to be a choking danger, or do birds generally know what to avoid?

My baby bird isn’t eating. What should I do?

I called the wildlife reserve and the woman told me keep the bird warm and make a nest for it so I did. I have tissue on the bottom on a shoe box and hot water in a jar of baby food with a cloth over it. The bird is chirping like once every couple of hours. It’s weak but moving a lot more than it was earlier this morning. She’s been hand fed once but that was hours ago. Please help me. The other four birds starved to death when their mom abandoned them.

What do u feed a sparrow?

I found an abandoned, injured sparrow on the street today. I took it home rather than leaving it out to die. I am taking care of it until i find a vet or an wildlife reserve. I am heading out tmw to search for one that specializes in birds… in the meantime what can i do to help the bird, do i feed it milk, water or salad etc. It is winter right now, so i doubt i will find any worms or anything like that. Please no snide remarks, i dont know much about taking care of birds, please help! i dont want this sweet creature to die. thanks.. ciao
