Woodpecker — injured juvenile downy woodpecker?

We have an injured juvenile downy woodpecker and have made several calls to local avian vets, rehab facilities and wildlife sanctuaries. Thus far, no response. While I still hope to hear back from someone knowledgeable who can take him, what do we do if they don’t? He has an injured wing, but otherwise is in good spirits. If he survives his injury, but can not fly, what are the odds that we can raise him in captivity? We have managed to feed him a couple of mealworms, but after that….? Has anyone else done this or had experience with this kind of bird? Thank you in advance.

Starlings are taking over my backyard birdfeeder…?

I have a backyard birdfeeder, and want to know how to attract different birds than I am getting. I am using mixed feed, also have a suet feeder, and I put out corn for the squirrels and birds. For the first couple of weeks, there were a couple of house finches and a downy woodpecker, along with cardinals, sparrows, doves, blue jays, grackles and juncos. But now, it seems the starlings are taking over. They’ve figured out how to eat out of the feeder, as well as from the suet, and run the smaller birds off. I wouldn’t mind feeding them too if they weren’t such bullies. The juncos are gone for the year, but I haven’t seen the woodpecker or finches for awhile. I plan to get a finch feeder, but is there anything else I can to to encourage different birds to come?

Great spotted woodpecker excavating blue tit nest box

Great spotted woodpecker excavating blue tit nest box

Near Harrogate, September 2010. Female great spotted woodpecker excavating a bluetit nestbox which is fixed to the bottom half of a disused telegraph pole. You can see her chucking out bits of wood, and I think she may be digging from the nest box through into the pole at the back. By the time this was recorded, she had been tapping away in there for at least a week, and she and other woodpeckers had been seen on previous occasions enlarging the entrance hole. (UPDATE 8 Sept 2010: She has since been roosting at night in the box. ) Although I could hear her tapping, the sound didn’t record properly, so I have added a soundtrack of Georgy Vinogradov singing “2 Maxima”, recorded in Moscow before 1951. It’s a lighthearted song about two machine-guns, and his imitation of the machine-gun sound is not unlike the woodpecker’s tapping which echoes from the birdbox. CCTV film of the same woodpecker inside the box is here on Wokanyixia’s channel: www.youtube.com
