I have some questions on hand feeding baby birds.?

First off, my birds are Zebra Finches. I know it’s not very common for someone to hand feed Zebra Finches, but I brought home my pair about a week ago, and my little brother was absolutely thrilled and he wanted to know if he could hold them. So I figure why not? The female laid her first egg either last night or this morning, so I figure, now is the time to figure out if hand feeding is a bad idea or not. First off, I won’t be horribly disappointed if my attempts to make them trust humans is all for nothing. But my main question is this: If I hand feed them, does that mean it has to be ALL me, or do the parents still pitch in? I work full time at a pet store and go to school, so I can’t take on the full job of raising them. Second question, how old should they be when I start hand feeding them? ..You know, I have a lot of questions. Maybe if someone could just tell me what to do, how to do it, how often, etc, that would be great. Thanks.

advice on zebra finches?

iv had a zebra finch(male) since march when i took him on cause his mate died and his owner want it to keep my siskin(a rescue bird) company, so i took him on. I have now taken on a female zebra who i found outside, she and my male have paired up, well i think they have. My male had a nest that he came with that had all the nesting material that was in it when he was with his old partner, and he was very protective of his nest. i took the advice that i got from a question i post recently, which was to remove all the nesting material from his nest an clean it so that he would allow the female to share his nest and hopefully begin to breed. he now allows her in the nest but he isnt building a nest hes just useing the nest box when he goes to bed at night. will he start to make a nest or will he just forget about it? i have put hay in the cage but he is still showing no intrest at all. any help will be great and any tips to get them to breed will be great!! thnks a lot
if she did lay eggs in the nest box but the male didnt make a nest will her eggs survive and hatch or does the male need to make a nest. when i put the female in at first the male mated her but they havent done it since (that i ahve seen) and he mated her on tuesday and there arent any eggs so i guess it wasnt sucessful.

Feeding pet birds eggs that they layed?

I have read over and over again that it is good for them, calicium and all.. i give them fresh eggs almost every day, shells and all, like it has been suggested and the totally love it.. so what i am doing different, is i am using the eggs that they lay to feed them, Farm fresh eggs , organic, happy birds.. anyways, is that wrong lol? they are zebra finches and i have 5 laying females, and i do not want babies so i take the eggs out anyway, just put them in a litte cup, mash them up shells and all , microwave for 15 seconds, stir micro 3 more seconds, blew on it and bam they are alllll over me eating and fighting over it..
You see if i buy a 12 pack they will go bad, my little birds can’t eat That much.. and they like em fried moreso than hardboiled lol Thanks

how am i sure that my zebra finches are mating? how do i know the eggs will hatch?

okay here goes the story. i have just gotten two zebra finches recentaly. a male (romeo) and a female (juliet), they seem to be mating because romeo keeps jumping on juliet’s head and back. the only problem is that i was reading simalr questions on tthis program , and some of them said that they wont lay eggs unless they have a wooden nesting box!! is this true?

the birds do have a breeding nest that was bought at a pet store and it would fit into there cages better than a wooden one. it said breeding nest on the front so … you figure. i am sure that it is fine i just am curious. also how small are the eggs compared to a certain coin?
thank you for all your help, it is greatly appreciated!!

Baby Birds, did I screw up?

I have a pair of Zebra Finches that mated. The eggs hatched about 4 weeks ago. I opened the nest box to check on them, and all four flew out. I had to chase them down and catch them to put them back. Since my scent got all over them, did the mother decide to reject them? They are about 4 weeks old and have all their feathers, but their beaks are still black and they don’t really come out of the nest box. Did the mother abandon them because i touched them?
thanks…I was worried. The female and the male were both staying out of the box and they tried mating again. They went back in though. I’ll pick a best answer as soon as it lets me
